Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, and Immunology are to conduct high impact research that is relevant to human health and train the next generation of biomedical scientists and physicians who will advance our understanding of infection and immunity in ways that benefit humankind. Molecular genetics is the field of biology that studies the structure and function of genes at a molecular level and thus employs methods of both molecular biology and genetics. The study of chromosomes and gene expression of an organism can give insight into heredity, genetic variation, and mutations. Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi, and protozoa. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to these agents. The immune system protects us from infection through various lines of defense, if the immune system is not functioning as it should, it can result in diseases, such as autoimmunity, allergy, and cancer.
